How To Backup your Mac

"There are two types of computer users, those who have lost all their data and those who are going to lose all their data."

I have had thru my shop, in the past 2 weeks alone, 5 people who have suffered a hard drive failure. 2 of them were lucky and we were able to save their data but the other 3 lost everything, precious family photos, months of classwork and projects, and years of small business financial data. The truly sad part of this story is that it didn't have to happen. Backup solutions are cheaper and easier than ever these days. Remember - ALL hard drives fail eventually.

Below is an overview of how you can protect yourself from this kind of loss.

  • Buy an external hard drive and use Time Machine (comes with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard) - $110(One 1TB drive)
  • Buy two identical external hard drives and store all your important files on one and then make the second drive an exact duplicate of the first. - $220(Two 2 TB drives)
  • Do either of the two above PLUS sign up for Backblaze online data storage. It's easy to use and very reasonably priced at $5/month.

Why should you use an online backup service? Simple, if your house burns down, floods, or is blown away by a tornado, all of your backups are destroyed too. Backing up to an online service keeps a copy of your stuff at a remote location. If BOTH your home AND the remote storage facility is destroyed at the same time, well, you and I have bigger problems!

Why Backblaze instead of Mozy, Carbonite, etc.?

I tested them all and Backblaze is the best. It's easy to setup and use, It's the ONLY one that backs up external drives, and the file retrieval system is simple and fast.

$5/month for unlimited data backup, I highly recommend Backblaze!
